Vevo May Switch Hosting To Facebook

CNET NEWS – Jan 20 – Knowledgeable sources today told CNET that music-video service Vevo has met with Facebook at least twice about possibly moving their hosting to the social networking site and away from Google-owned YouTube. Though Vevo still has another year remaining in their contract with YouTube, at least two meetings have taken place with Facebook, most recently within the last two weeks. If Vevo makes the move, Facebook could finally provide a compelling music service to its members that would keep them on the site longer. Launched in 2009, Vevo offers music videos from three of the four major record labels: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music.

Google+ Reaches 90 Million Users

MASHABLE – Jan 19 – In a press release issued for Google’s fourth quarter, CEO Larry Page announced that Google+ now has 90M users globally, well over double the 40M announced in October 2011. Experian Hitwise predicts that Google+ may hit 400M by the end of 2012. Introduced in June 2011, Google+ has undergone massive growth, but still falls far short of the membership seen by Facebook, which one analyst predicts will hit 1 billion members by August 2012. Also announced in the press release were some impressive figures for Google – Q4 saw $10.58 billion in revenues and 250M Android devices are on the market, up 50M from Q3 2011.

Twitter Acquires News Aggregate Summify

MASHABLE – Jan 19 – Startup social aggregation service Summify announced Thursday that it has been acquired by Twitter, though it remains unclear how the social networking site will integrate Summify’s business strategy into its own. Launched by two Romanian entrepreneurs, Summify collects and delivers the top five news stories being shared by friends on your social networks and delivers them in a daily summary. Terms of the deal have remained confidential, but Summify has already stopped new account registrations and will remove some of its key features in the coming weeks as it prepares for the merger.

Tagged Claims “Largest”, Forgets About Badoo

TECH CRUNCH – Jan 19 – Recently, Tagged VP of Sales and Marketing Steve Sarner claimed that other companies are only just catching on to 'social discovery' sites like Tagged and his site is "by far the largest" in that sector. Author Mike Butcher threw some numbers out to argue that while Tagged has been growing, Badoo has been around just as long and is boasting larger revenues. Tagged shows a revenue growth of 35% to more than $43M and through a roll up of companies such as Digsby, WeGame, Topicmarks and hi5, now has a registered user base of 330M with active users at 20M. London-based Badoo has 35M+ active monthly users, claims annual revenue of $150M+ and has been profitable for the last 24 months after 64% year on year growth.

YouTube Agrees To Modify Terms Of Service

GOVT TECH – Jan 17 – After nearly 18 months of discussion with the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO), YouTube has agreed to modify its terms of service to help state government agencies with faster adoption and safer usage on the site. NASCIO has had recent success with getting Facebook to update its terms of service last year, and hopes to develop similar agreements with other social media sites, including Twitter. Under the new agreement, state agencies may skip over YouTube’s standard “click through” agreement and instead have the option to adopt the newly developed content license agreement. Under this new agreement, state agencies would not be responsible for paying legal fees in the event that YouTube gets sued.

India Drags Facebook And Google To Court

EMIRATES247 - Jan 16 - India has dragged Facebook and Google to court over ‘offensive material’ posted on its sites. A senior Indian minister has also accused such networks of prioritising US standards over Indian sensibilities. According to the government cases have been registered against 21 social networking sites for insulting its political leaders and religious sentiments. What is really affecting Indian officials are “vulgar” images and texts freely available on social networks depicting India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi and other major religious figures.

Facebook To Hit 1 Billion User Mark In August

MASHABLE - Jan 12 - Having passed the $1 billion revenue mark some time ago, Facebook is now closing in on 1 billion users. The company claimed 800M users in September, so it’s not surprising that claiming membership of one-seventh of humanity is now within the social network’s grasp. According to Gregory Lyons, a senior analyst at iCrossing, Facebook will reach the milestone in August. Using linear regression on date from 2008 until the end of last year, Lyons created the chart. Twitter Really Hates Google’s New Google+ Integration

TECH CRUNCH - Jan 11 - This morning, Google began rolling out a major change to its core search engine that intertwines results from Google+ with the ‘normal’ algorithmically-generated results. There have been plenty of critiques of the news on how this isn’t actually integrating ‘Your World’, as Google calls it, but rather just its own social network. Alex Macgillivray from Twitter called it “A bad day for the Internet”. Today’s launch may incentivize publishers and users to pay more attention to Google+ when it comes to sharing breaking news — after all, it’s the only service that’s going to pop up in Google search results. Which would reduce Google’s reliance on Twitter. But Twitter does have a point: people trust Google to serve up the most timely, relevant information possible. And without Twitter’s data, it’s going to have a hard time doing that.

Myspace Reinvents Itself As An “Entertainment Experience"

VENTUREBEAT - Jan 10 - Panasonic’s big bet in 2012 is Myspace, a social network that has been steadily losing cachet since 2008. Panasonic trotted out Justin Timberlake at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to try and bring sexy back to the pioneering website known for social networking, band promotion and really bad web design, all while making Panasonic TVs more integrated into your social life. Myspace is staking its reinvention on Myspace TV, a service that lets you chat with friends, share shows and internet videos, and discover what’s popular among other Myspace TV viewers. Myspace TV will be integrated into Panasonic Viera televisions, giving the social network a powerful leg up in its reinvention. Myspace TV will launch this spring.

Facebook, Twitter Protecting Users From Spammers

CNN - Jan 5 - Spammers are targeting Facebook and Twitter. In November 2011, 70% of all email was spam. The good news is, that was down from 92% in August 2010. But here's the bad news. Spammers are moving to social networks. Spammers hit 4M Facebook users a day. But Facebook is fighting back. Each day the site blocks 200M malicious actions, such as links to malware. As for Twitter, 1.5% of all tweets in 2010 were spam content. Facebook has a team of 30 workers who spend hours combing the site for user-reported spam. It also has become stricter on user identity and has made it harder for hackers to create fake profiles. Twitter, on the other hand, has only two programmers fighting spam.

Who Owns Your Twitter Account?

CNET NEWS - Dec 26 - Who really owns your Twitter account? That's the question at the heart of a lawsuit that could redefine the right of employers to seize and make use of employees' social-media accounts. For four years, writer Noah Kravitz produced reviews and video blogs for the mobile-phone site phonedog.com. During the same period, he also posted on Twitter and gathered 17K followers. When Kravitz left PhoneDog he continued using the account--with PhoneDog's blessing. Eight months after Kravitz lef, PhoneDog sued him, claiming that Kravitz's Twitter followers represented a customer list, that Kravitz had failed to relinquish the Twitter account when asked, and that he had therefore misappropriated trade secrets and interfered with PhoneDog's business to the tune of $340,000--$2.50 per follower per month.

2011: The Year When Japan Went Global Over Social Networking

JAPAN TIMES - Dec 21 - A report on Japanese social network usage issued by Nielsen/NetRatings on Nov. 18 made a huge impact in Japan, as the statistics indicated that the number of Mixi users (8.39M) has fallen below that of Facebook users (11.31M). This news was widely picked up by the Japanese media — forcing Mixi to issue an official statement that it has 15.16M active users. According to Mixi, the Nielsen research only includes traffic coming from personal computers, which accounts for half of Mixi's users. Mixi states that 80% of the traffic to the site is coming from mobile phones. Nielsen always says that the report is based on PC traffic only. On Dec.14, Twitter confirmed that Japanese users had once again recorded the highest number of tweets per second.

China Imposes New Rules On Social Networks

MERCURY NEWS - Dec 18 - For many users, the most striking of the new rules requires people using the sites, called microblogs, or weibo in Chinese, to register with their real names and biographical information. They will still be able to post under aliases, according to a report by Xinhua, the state news agency. The real-name registration could dampen some of the freewheeling conversations that take place online, and that sometimes result in a large number of users' criticizing officials and government policy.

When It Comes To Mobile Devices, Focus Will Be On Location

WASHINGTON POST - Dec 12 - It’s almost impossible to separate the rise in location-based technologies from the popularity of smartphones. One locally developed smartphone app, called Sponto, promotes social gatherings by showing when users congregate in large numbers. The StrEats app, also being developed by locals, will track the District’s food trucks. But inherent in these technologies are questions about privacy, particularly when a consumer’s location is tracked by default or without his or her explicit consent.

SmartDate CEO Starts Daily Deals Site

DDO - Dec 4 - We've noticed quite a few dating company founders are foraying into the daily deals space. The latest addition is Fabrice LeParc, the founder of troubled (that's being kind) dating site SmartDate. Squarechic.com offers 2 for 1 deals, on "WHATever, and WHENever", starting with New York, London and Paris. An iPhone & Android app will give users a subscription based 'virtual pass' which pinpoints their exact location to show participating deals around them. The app is due to launch December 2011. Fabrice has teamed up with Daniel Kershaw who was formerly country manager for the UK based electronics retailer Dixons. Great business model, but a lousy name. 'WHATever, WHENever' is amusingly laissez-faire. Hopefully this business will fly more smoothly, and contractors and employees will get paid.

Two-Thirds Of Online U.S. Adults Use Social Media

MASHABLE - Nov 16 - The most common reason U.S. adults use social networks is to stay in touch with friends and family members, A Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project study reveals. Older users (ages 50 to 64) are more likely than younger users (ages 18 to 29) to use social media to find others with similar interests or hobbies. Quepasa's Last Horrendous Quarter

THE MOTLEY FOOL - Nov 15 - Quepasa revenue plunged 46% to a mere $1.5M. The drop occurred primarily due to a 32% plunge in monthly active users of its website. The quarterly deficit widened to $3.5M. Quepasa also served up 579M page views during the quarter, 29% ahead of where it was a year ago. In short, there may be fewer users around but they're more engaged even if they're not being monetized more effectively.
